Bahlil Will Soon Meet with Freeport McMoran Officials to Finalize PTFI Share Divestment

JAKARTA – Discussions on the divestment of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) shares are being discussed again with the government. In fact, Freeport McMoran officials are also scheduled to participate in the discussions in the near future.
Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), stated that the government has held advanced discussions regarding share divestment as one of the main conditions in negotiations to extend the contract beyond 2041.
He emphasized that the government is open to extending PTFI’s Papua contract on the condition that it acquires additional shares from Freeport McMoran of more than 10%.
“Once again, I’m not giving the exact figure. What is clear is that our initial negotiations were for 10%. But there is potential for it to be above 10%,” Bahlil said at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Wednesday.
He emphasized that discussions with Freeport McMoran will also intensify in the near future. “These are negotiations. I will meet with Freeport management this afternoon. I will meet with Freeport McMoran management in the near future,” Bahlil emphasized.
Since securing a contract extension until 2041, Freeport has clearly stated its intention to extend the contract beyond 2041, believing that the sustainability of their investment requires business certainty.
The government appears to be in no rush to provide contract certainty beyond 2041. It will currently conduct a regulatory evaluation. The initial plan is to issue a Government Regulation (PP) to accommodate Freeport’s contract extension.(RA)
